About Canter-Berry Farms

Canter-Berry Farms is proudly owned and operated by Wakulima USA, a nonprofit organization committed to creating greater access to agriculture, community, and opportunity.

Rooted in the Auburn Valley for more than 150 years, Canter-Berry Farms carries a rich legacy of growing Blueberries, welcoming families, and connecting people with the land. Today, Wakulima USA is building on that legacy preserving the farm’s history while creating new opportunities for people and communities to grow.

From blueberry U-Pick and seasonal farm products to the historic 1879 barn, Canter-Berry Farms remains a place where people can experience the simple joy of being on a farm. As part of Wakulima USA’s broader mission, the farm is also becoming a place for agricultural learning, community connection, wellness, and environmental stewardship.

This is more than a farm. It is a place where history meets possibility—where land is cared for, knowledge is shared, communities come together, and a new generation can grow.

A Farm With a Story

Rooted in the land for more than 150 years, Canter-Berry Farms carries a story of family, farming, and community.

The land that would become Canter-Berry Farms was cleared and developed as a working homestead, becoming part of the early agricultural story of the Upper Green River Valley.

S.A. Crisp built the farm’s timber-frame barn using hand-shaped timbers from trees harvested on the valley floor. More than 150 years later, it remains a defining landmark of the farm.

The homestead’s earliest known residents were Emilien and Constance Paumel, who had immigrated to America from Southern France. The Paumel family established a working farm on the property, where the barn was used as a dairy barn.

The family also grew and sold fruit from the property, including apples, plums, pears, and other crops. Remnants of the Paumel homestead and other early farm structures remain part of the property’s history.

Emilien and Constance Paumel, immigrants from Southern France, established a working farm on the property. The barn served as a dairy barn, while the family also grew and sold apples, plums, pears, and other crops.

Fred and Edith Metzler moved their family from South Seattle to the valley and purchased the farm. They continued its blueberry-growing tradition while helping preserve land along the Green River.

Doug and Clarissa Metzler carried on the blueberry tradition while raising, training, and showing American Saddlebred horses. Their two passions inspired the farm’s name: “Canter” for the horse and “Berry” for the blueberries.

Canter-Berry blueberries and homemade products reached Seattle’s Pike Place Market. Jam, syrup, vinegar, chutney, and other blueberry creations brought the farm’s harvest to a growing audience.

Canter-Berry Farms partnered with Hoodsport Winery to create wine from the farm’s own blueberries, adding another creative chapter to its blueberry tradition.

After decades of commercial blueberry production and product making, the Metzler family retired from that part of the business. Blueberries continued to grow, and the farm remained a place for U-Pick and community.

Wakulima USA acquired Canter-Berry Farms, bringing a new vision focused on agriculture, community, wellness, and conservation.

The blueberries are still growing, the historic barn still stands, and the farm continues to welcome the community. Canter-Berry Farms carries its history forward while creating a new chapter for generations to come.

Come for the blueberries. Stay for the history.
